Become a Foster Home

We are always in need of foster homes. The more foster homes we have available, the more Shelties we can help. While you are fostering a Sheltie, MNSR covers the cost of veterinary bills, medicine, supplies and food.

The foster home provides the love and support that the Sheltie needs in order to prepare them for their adoptive home, and helps to evaluate the Sheltie’s temperament so that we can determine the best match for the dog. A foster home commitment may be as short as a week or two for vacation fosters, or it could be several months. Some of our Shelties who are elderly or who have ongoing medical needs become part of our Special Needs Longterm Care program. These dogs remain in foster care long term with support from Minnesota Sheltie Rescue. Please let us know if you are interested in fostering a Sheltie in this program.

We especially need foster homes that are comfortable working with very shy dogs that have little or no socialization when they first come into rescue. Due to the high flight risk associated with the breed, which is heightened when a dog is in a new environment, we generally require our foster homes to have a securely fenced yard.

Becoming a foster home with MNSR is very similar to our adoption process. This process helps us to match incoming Shelties with a foster home that is best able to meet the dog's needs to minimize transitions. First, complete an online application (it's the same application for adopting a dog, and select "foster" in the drop-down when completing the application). Our volunteers will talk with references and meet with you at the home visit prior to foster placement. Please read Summary of the Application and Adoption or Foster Process for more information, or email us at foster@mnsheltierescue.org if you have additional questions.
